The grace given to David
Introduction
Isaiah 55:3 "Incline your ear, and come unto me: hear, and your soul shall live; and I will make an everlasting covenant with you, even the sure mercies of David."
We see David was exalted in his life by the hands of God. Our Lord God created a divine covenant with David as he loved him. And also our Lord poured down his mercy towards David and to his generations. Today, let us meditate upon the few attributes of David that enabled him to receive the divine grace of God.
I Anointed David
I Samuel 16:13 "Then Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the midst of his brethren: and the Spirit of the LORD came upon David from that day forward. So Samuel rose up, and went to Ramah."
Over here we see David was anointed by Samuel, the servant of God. David was anointed before his brothers in the family. The state of David changes after he gets anointed. Earlier, David was never given respect in his family and he was never considered important. But after his anointment, the whole world respected David. This anointment enabled him to be truthful on the works that he did. In Proverbs 22:29 ‘Seest thou a man diligent in his business? he shall stand before kings; he shall not stand before mean men.’ As recorded in the verse, the diligence of David made him stand before the king Saul. When we meditate upon the life of David, we can very well understand that David never boasted nor exalted himself. Our Lord God himself exalts him. Even in our lives, we the children of God who are anointed by the hands of God, we will be exalted high. In I Peter 5:6 ‘Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time:’ As recorded in this passage, we the children of God will be exalted by our Lord almighty. Perhaps, all our promises might not have been fulfilled, but we should have a firm faith that the grace that was bestowed upon David will be poured upon us as well.
II Humbled David
I Samuel 16:21 "And David came to Saul, and stood before him: and he loved him greatly; and he became his armourbearer."
Here in this passage we see David who came to play the harp before the King, he becomes the king’s armour bearer. Our Lord blessed David with a posting in the king’s place. Later in I Samuel 17:15 ‘But David went and returned from Saul to feed his father's sheep at Bethlehem.’ We see even after getting a good job at the king’s place, David returned to his regular business. Despite blessed with a good position, David chose to look after his father’s sheeps at Bethlehem. This act of humbleness fetched him grace in the sight of our Lord God. Even in our lives, we need to be like unto David to be grounded and humbled. Though we are blessed and we are given more powers and responsibilities in our lives, we should always be humble like David.
III Exalted David
I Samuel 17:14 "And David was the youngest: and the three eldest followed Saul."
As we have dealt already, the state of David at his family was not conducive for him. He was never given importance as he was the youngest among all. In I Samuel 17:33 ‘And Saul said to David, Thou art not able to go against this Philistine to fight with him: for thou art but a youth, and he a man of war from his youth.’ When we read this passage how David was provoked and demotivated to face the war as he was young. David was not physically powerful to face the giant but he beats the giant by the mighty power of God. David who was demotivated, beats the unbeatable by the power of God. And the Lord God exalts him. Even in our lives, we have many people like Saul who discourages us constantly. But God says, we the children of God can do all things by our Lord God. This is rightly recorded in Philippians 4:13 ‘I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.’ May the divine power of God strengthen us.
IV David believed in God
I Samuel 17:38-39 “And Saul armed David with his armour, and he put an helmet of brass upon his head; also he armed him with a coat of mail. And David girded his sword upon his armour, and he assayed to go; for he had not proved it. And David said unto Saul, I cannot go with these; for I have not proved them. And David put them off him.”
Over here we see David was clad with the armours of Saul and they are trying to get himself prepared for the war. In I Samuel 17:40 ‘And he took his staff in his hand, and chose him five smooth stones out of the brook, and put them in a shepherd's bag which he had, even in a scrip; and his sling was in his hand: and he drew near to the Philistine.’ But David chose not to put on all those heavy garments, he never trusted on the helmets and swords but instead he believed in the mighty name of our Lord God. Even in our lives, when situations are contrary we tend to believe on people around us. But at the time of calamity nobody will come into our rescue. In I Samuel 17:34-35’And David said unto Saul, Thy servant kept his father's sheep, and there came a lion, and a bear, and took a lamb out of the flock: And I went out after him, and smote him, and delivered it out of his mouth: and when he arose against me, I caught him by his beard, and smote him, and slew him.’
These passages clearly tells us how the hands of the Lord was with David and protected him from all fatal mishaps. As the glory of the Lord was revealed in this situation, same way it will be revealed in our lives as well. At the time of any danger, lets put our trusts on our Lord and he will save us. The same Lord who gave victory to David will also be with us lead us guide us and protect us. Amen.
