Power of Jesus 

John 2:10 “And saith unto him, Every man at the beginning doth set forth good wine; and when men have well drunk, then that which is worse: but thou hast kept the good wine until now.”

                The above passage marks the first miracle worked out by the Lord Jesus Christ. We see Jesus turned water into wine. The Lord revealed his miracle by blessing the water and turning it to wine which was good and satisfactory. In order to reveal his divine identity as the son of God, Jesus performed the miracle at the wedding. Even today, the Lord reveals his divine nature by working out his powerful miracles to our family. In every miracle that Jesus performed, we see his power revealed in different ways. Before Jesus could work out a miracle at the wedding, he monitors the desperate family at the time of distress. He watches the family on how they are handling the situation before the power of the Lord is revealed. Today, let us meditate the reasons why the power of Jesus was revealed at the wedding of Cana.

Decision

John 2:2-3 “And both Jesus was called, and his disciples, to the marriage. And when they wanted wine, the mother of Jesus saith unto him, They have no wine.”

                In the above passage we see, there was a shortage of wine at the wedding of Cana. It is believed that if there was a shortage of any kind at the wedding, laws were in place for the bride’s family to take legal actions against the groom. During this crisis situation, we see Mary, the mother of Jesus informs the shortage issue to Jesus. She takes a wise decision by communicating the problem to Jesus. This initiated Jesus to reveal his power at the wedding. Scholars believe that based on John 2:9-10, the financial expenses are borne by the groom’s family. We see Mary, the mother of Jesus handles the crisis situation by doing the right thing. Her wise decision played an important role for the power of Jesus to be revealed. Even in our lives, we must handle the problematic situations wisely. If our decisions are not made at the right times, we will have to pay the price for it. We the children of God must take right decisions at the right time.

Belief

John 2:4-5 “Jesus saith unto her, Woman, what have I to do with thee? mine hour is not yet come.His mother saith unto the servants, Whatsoever he saith unto you, do it.”

                Here we see when Mary informs about the shortage, the response she got was not satisfactory. Jesus responded stating that his hour has not come yet. On hearing the response, Mary was not disappointed nor were angry on Jesus. But she did not give up even if her first attempt was failed. Though the response of Jesus was contrary, Mary believed in the words of Jesus. We see Jesus did not deny to do a miracle but he said his time has not come. It was just a delay and not a denial from the Christ.  In verse five, Mary commands the servants to do whatever Jesus asks them to do. She had a firm belief that God is able to work out a miracle at any given time. Mary was relentless in her belief and she witnessed a miracle. As recorded in Proverbs 24:14 ‘and thy expectation shall not be cut off.’ We the children of God should never quit in expecting a miracle from the Lord God Almighty.  

Action

John 2:7-8 “Jesus saith unto them, Fill the waterpots with water. And they filled them up to the brim. And he saith unto them, Draw out now, and bear unto the governor of the feast. And they bare it.”

                We see the servants trusted on the words of Jesus and acted upon the same. When Jesus asked them to fill the water pots with water, they immediately obeyed his words. And also, when Jesus asked them to serve the same to the governor of the feast, they did not doubt. They obeyed and did everything what Jesus asked them to do. The actions of the servants made the Lord to work out a miracle. Jesus saw their faith and obedient actions and it pleased him.

In John 2:9-10 ‘When the ruler of the feast had tasted the water that was made wine, and knew not whence it was: (but the servants which drew the water knew;) the governor of the feast called the bridegroom, And saith unto him, Every man at the beginning doth set forth good wine; and when men have well drunk, then that which is worse: but thou hast kept the good wine until now.’ Only the servants knew it was water which was served to the governor of the feast. But when the ruler of the feast tasted it, he found it to be a good and better wine. Usually, the wine gets better with time when it is preserved and fermented. The power of the Lord made a water-turned-wine to taste as good as a preserved wine. Our Lord is a Lord of times who can do things instantly that usually happen over a longer time. After surrendering all glory and honor to Jesus in John 2:5, Mary’s portion was not found in the later part of the passages. Through the actions, the power of the Lord is revealed and a miracle takes place at the wedding.

Even in our lives, the grace of the Lord will enable us to take right decisions at the right time. Let us put our trust in the words of the Lord and act in faith to receive the abundant blessings of the Lord. Amen.
